Frequently Asked Questions
(Issues most frequently seen while attempting to log into the Remote Access System...)

Why can’t I see the icons that I have on my own desktop at the office?

A: The computer that you are connecting to isn’t your personal workstation, but is a new server that we have setup for remote use. Therefore anything that is on your local computer, stays there (desktop, local drive, cddrive). If you need to access files not on the network, it is best to put them in your P: drive. The P: drive is mounted when you log into the remote workstation.

Why are certain programs slow and others responsive?

A: The amount of information on the screen can severely afect performance. For instance, drawing in AutoCAD moving one line at a time generally is very responsive where zooming and moving an entire image in Photoshop is slower. This is because the system only updates the parts of the screen that have changed to reduce internet traffic. When only small parts have changed (i.e. moving a line in AutoCAD), the device has to send little information over the internet. When a large portion or all of the screen changes, more information must be sent and consequently is slower. This is partially dependent on the speed of your internet connection as well. Make sure that you have all other programs that might access the internet closed to make the most bandwidth available for screen redraws (i.e. programs like personal e-mail, internet pages, Peer2Peer file sharing programs, etc.).

The entire system seems very slow.

A1: Up to 10 people at a time can use the system. If there are that many people in at the same time then it is likely that it will be slow. We are monitoring usage and will increase capacity as demand increases.

A2: This system is partially dependent on the speed of your internet connection as well.  Make sure that you have all other programs that might access the internet closed to make the most bandwidth available for screen redraws (i.e. programs like personal e-mail, internet pages, Peer2Peer file sharing programs, etc.).

I don’t have Microsoft Project / MindManager / other program on my computer in the office. Can I use this from inside Bergmeyer’s network?

A: Yes, you can access the remote access workstation from anywhere on the internet including from the office.
